One inspiring example of the impact of Joseph House is the story of a refugee family from Afghanistan who found hope, safety, and support through our community. One of our dedicated volunteers, Mary Wagner, first met the family while they were shopping at Joseph House and soon became an important mentor and source of encouragement for them.
A year and a half ago, a single mother and her three young children — including one child with severe disabilities — arrived in the United States after fleeing a dangerous and abusive situation in Afghanistan. Once a successful OB/GYN physician, she came to this country with very few possessions and an uncertain future, determined to build a safer life for her children.
Through the compassion and generosity of the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, Joseph House, and many caring individuals and organizations, the family received critical support including rent assistance, medical care, clothing, grocery gift cards, furniture, a computer, and ongoing emotional encouragement.
Today, the family continues to make remarkable progress. The mother’s English skills have improved dramatically, and she recently began working at the Cleveland Clinic. With her background as a doctor, nurse, and ultrasound technician, she hopes to continue advancing her training and career in the medical field.
Their resilience, determination, and love for one another are a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact that compassion and community support can make.
